Subic company exports 130 reconditioned vehicles to United Arab Emirates, South Africa

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT ZONE — Despite a leadership vacuum in the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), Subic Bay Motors Corp. (SBMC) shipped out yesterday 130 units of reconditioned sports utilities vehicles (SUVs) to Dubai and South Africa.

With its partnership with international vehicle marketing firms, such as Apple International Co., Ltd. of Mie, Japan and Azumaya Tohin Seisakusho Ltd. of Nagoya, Japan, SBMC is now able to further expand its international market.

SBMA Deputy Administrator for Business Herminigildo Atienza, who was present during the sendoff, stated that he is pleased with the shift in business that the SBMC has done.

"We’re happy for SBMC, and I believe this is their third shipment, and this is also a clear indication that there is a huge demand for their vehicles," he said.

Atienza said this also means more job opportunities for the people of Subic, Olongapo and nearby Bataan.

SBMC General Manager Ben Perez said that the company, being the first and only exporter of used vehicles in this premier Freeport zone, is proud to be a major part in the development of the new "Filipino ingenuity" in moto- vehicle reconditioning that has been lauded and acceptable in the global market.

"We should all be proud of this newfound Filipino craftsmanship that has been duly certified by recipient countries as highly dependable, environment friendly and road worthy," Perez said in his message delivered during the sendoff ceremony on-board cargo-vessel Merlion Ace docked at the former US Naval Ship Repair Facility compound.

Ironically, the Philippine government has yet to give recognition of the trading and re-manufacturing business of second-hand vehicles, and instead it has imposed restrictions that led to closure of several other vehicle importers here, thus dislocating thousands of workers.

Of the 130 units, 50 reconditioned SUVs, which were sold to Trust Co. Ltd. of Nagoya, Japan will be shipped to Durban, South Africa while the remaining 80 units will be shipped to Al Moin Motors in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Marketing partner, Azumaya Tohin Seisakusho, represented by its managing director Komei Toya, said that "we are in the final negotiation stage with buyers from Africa and Middle East to supply on a monthly basis some 300 used left-hand drive passenger cars.

"This project would employ 500 to 700 highly skilled workers and technicians to meet the buyers’ delivery requirements,"Komei said.

Earlier, SBMC, in its exploratory conduct of export business, penetrated the international market with shipment of 180 units of used vehicles that were sold to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam through its partner and sole distributor, Carlyn Trading of Thailand.

The initial shipment for export included 129 units Mitsubishi Pajero, 50 units Toyota Hi-lux Surf and two units of Toyota Land Cruiser consigned to Carlyna Trading Co., Ltd. of Bangkok, Thailand.

Carlyna Trading is the trading partner of Apple International Co. that distributes both brand new and used vehicles in Asia and neighboring countries.

All these vehicles have undergone extensive conversion process with the steering wheels and other mechanical peripheral parts were converted from right-hand to left-hand drive.

The conversion method has been considered new and distinct in the usual mechanical process that has been perfected by Filipino expert-mechanics.

"We will do our best to sell more in the future," Perez said.
