DTI asked to promote investments

and protect local industries

Senator Richard Gordon called on the Department of Trade and Industry to promote and bring in investments and job opportunities in the country and to intensify its moves to protect the local industries.

“The DTI’s duty isn’t merely to negotiate and monitor trade agreements and developments. They are supposed to promote trade and industry in the country and bring in investments and jobs for our people,” emphasized Gordon.

During the Senate deliberations for the department’s budget for next year, Gordon deplored the failure of the officials of the DTI to endorse and promote the Philippines in the international market and make it attractive for potential investors.

“We see in the newspapers how Hong Kong cabs are utilized to promote the Philippines as a tourism destination. Why not create your own promotion campaign which will say ‘Invest in WOW Philippines!’, “ Gordon suggested.

Gordon also criticized DTI’s failure to protect the local industries, particularly the car manufacturers, because of their inaction with regards to the rampant importation of used illegal right-hand converted vehicles in the country.

“The DTI seems to be lacking aggressiveness in promoting investments in the country. Furthermore, it is not aggressive in protecting the local industries,” Gordon complained.

He urged Trade Secretary Peter Fabila to intensify its moves to bring in investors in the country. Gordon said he is in support for the increase of budget for DTI but emphasized that this should be used for promotion. He said that the current budget deliberations are not just aimed to discuss fund appropriations for the department but is also meant to be a venue to discuss its plans and programs and develop the government agency’s strengths and address its shortcomings.

Gordon also suggested to Fabila to make their trade attachès accountable and asked them to regularly submit monitoring and development reports enumerating not just assessment of trade policies but also of updates on the number of investments that they are able to bring in the country.
