New oil smuggling scheme uncovered in Pampanga

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) said on Friday that it uncovered a new oil smuggling scheme involving a seller of diesoline in Pampanga.

BIR Commissioner Lilian Hefti said field officials of the Pampanga revenue district office apprehended recently a diesoline operator and his cohorts in Mabalacat town where they have been selling diesel gas on retail without paying the necessary taxes.

Hefti said the apprehension of the tax evader is in line with the BIR’s ongoing campaign to run after traders operating in the underground economy who make huge profit from their business but do not pay taxes.

The apprehended diesoline seller was identified as Roel Yango, a resident of the Madapdap resettlement area in Mabalacat.

According to investigators, Yango’s modus operandi is to sell fuel on a "tingi-tingi’’ basis to various clients who would later resell them to the market.

It was learned that some of Yango’s cohorts were also apprehended in an operation jointly conducted by personnel of the BIR, the local police, and Bureau of Customs (BoC).

Allegedly confiscated from Yango was a big fuel tank that can accommodate 10,000 liters.

Those who were apprehended were immediately required to register with the BIR and meted penalties for violation of tax laws and regulations.

"Internal revenue taxes will also be assessed from the time they started their business operations up to the time of their apprehension,’’ Hefti said.

It was learned that in a recent command conference with BIR officials, Finance Secretary Gary Teves instructed the taxmen to exhaust all ways and means to increase the government’s tax collection.

"Let’s move and I need your support to stop the bleeding,’’ Teves was quoted as saying.
