Mobile filmmaking growing!

Cinemaiksi 2007: The 1st Philippine Advertising Congress Short Film Festival, part of the activities of the 20th Philippine Advertising Congress to be held in Subic, Nov. 21-24.

Nokia continues to be a leader in the mobile imaging revolution by encouraging mobile phone users to go to the next level: video.

Ever since Janice Yu bagged the first ever Mobile Filmmakers 05 award in Singapore, Nokia Philippines has conducted three workshops, giving users an opportunity to learn filmmaking using their handsets.

Nokia teamed up with Discovery Networks Asia in the first two workshops to feature notable lecturers such as BBC documentary producer Ian Oliver and multi-awarding filmmaker Jeffrey Jeturian.

Armed with Nokia N series phones, participants got hands-on training and came up with material filmed around the Manila Orchidarium or Greenhills Shopping Center in a limited period of time.

Mobile Imaging and film enthusiasts were also encouraged to share their day's discovery by uploading their works in "What's Your Story" (http://www.whatsyourstory.com.ph)

Cinemaiksi: Round 1

For the third workshop, recently held Oct. 19-20, all the participants came from advertising, an industry going through many changes. Twelve teams (consisting of two members each) from different agencies had to register and qualify for the two-day live-in mobile filmmaking workshop.

Day 1 was packed with lectures and participants were asked overnight to produce their 60-seconder material using the Nokia N95.

The three speakers of the workshop were Palanca awardee and director of the Cinemalaya best film, "Tribu," Jim Libiran, whose vast experience as a journalist successfully crossing over to television and later short films inspired the participants with his lecture, "The Director as the Storyteller."

Cinematographer Poppet Celdran gave valuable pointers during his lecture on "The Art of Lighting for Film & Video." And digital editor Dominic Salvacion encouraged the participants to push the limits through editing with his lecture, "Cutting Edge: Techniques from the Masters" The speakers also doubled as mentors of the participants during the two-day workshop.

The themes given to work on were "You know you're a Filipino if…" and "What makes Manila unique." Teams were given almost a day to go around the rousing city that inspired many songs and movies. Some teams shot all night while others focused on the story content. There were teams who won the approval of the judges with their knack for editing while others tickled the audience with memorable punch lines or creative storytelling.

Cinemaiksi: Round 1

During Day 2 of the workshop, the teams presented their work to a panel of judges and the top five received a Nokia N95 to be used to compete again in Cinemaiksi 2007: The 1st Philippine Advertising Congress Short Film Festival, part of the activities of the 20th Philippine Advertising Congress to be held in Subic, Nov. 21-24.

The grand prize winner of Cinemaiksi 2007 will take home P50,000 cash, a trophy and a trip to the 2008 Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video awards.

The People's Choice Award winner will receive P30,000.

It only seems like yesterday when Gary Oldman paraphrased the Bard, "All the world's a stage…" while filming himself in the middle of a busy street (Ed, Nokia N93 Advertisement).

Most of us then thought that mobile phones can never replace the real thing. Now, we find ourselves in a mobile imaging revolution despite the continuing debate between the old and the new.

Terms such a "citizen journalism" or "Mobile Filmmakers" have never popped up so often. From blogs to the evening news, video clips taken with mobile phones are a staple.

And since our devices are considered powerful tools with its capabilities, we must remind ourselves to be responsible with the content we produce. And unlike the devices that come out everyday, it is good content that is irreplaceable.
