CITY NUTRITION COUNCIL CONSULTATION
The City Nutrition Council together with representatives from the Regional Evaluation Team held a consultation meeting on October 30, 2008 at Olongapo City Hall to evaluate and discuss concerns about the city’s nutrition program.
Representatives from the Regional Evaluation team were Maria Vicenta Magpantay and Angelita Pasos. City Nutrition Council members who were present during the meeting include City Nutritionist Richele Eve Torralba, City Health Officer Dr. Arnildo Tamayo, Livelihood and Cooperative Development Office (LCDO) chair Aileen Sanchez, United Nations Populations Fund officer Dyesebel Dado and City Council Health Committee Chair Gie Baloy.
During the meeting, Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr. laid out his plans to improve the nutritional status of Olongapeños through a series of programs.
“We have created a sports medicine council para magkaroon tayo ng mas malakas na laban sa sports. Nutrition plays a major part in improving our players’ performance at dapat habang bata pa ay pinapakain na natin ng tama ang mga anak natin upang lumaki silang malakas at competitive,” said Mayor Gordon.
Also discussed during the meeting was the management of canteens in public schools in accordance to the Department of Education (DepEd) memorandum.
“We will make sure na ang mga estudyante ay tama ang kinakain at dapat magsimula yan sa mga eskwelahan. We will set a meeting with the school officials para mapag-usapan pa lalo ang pagpapalakad ng mga canteens at siguraduhin na nutritious foods ang sine-serve sa mga estudyante,” explained Mayor Gordon.
Other important concerns regarding the components of the city’s nutrition evaluation were also raised which included programs like operation timbang, feeding programs, iodine fortification and others.
“To ensure na matatag ang ating nutrition program sa city dapat magtulungan ang mga miyembro ng council at pati ang core sectors ng lungsod, partikular na ang mga barangay ay dapat maki-coordinate at siguraduhin na ang mga programa ay naii-implement at naipapatupad ng maayos,” said Torralba.
