3,000 OLONGAPEÑOS BENEFITED FROM ARF-VDR MEDCAP
The first-ever ASEAN Regional Forum-Voluntary Demonstration of Response (ARF-VDR) on Disaster Relief conducted a Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP) at IRAM Resettlement in Olongapo City on May 4-6, 2009.
With Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr., Olongapo City’s Disaster Management Office (DMO) led the three-day Medical, Dental, Optometry and Veterinary Services at Iram Resettlement.
Some one thousand (1,000) residents from New Cabalan were the initial beneficiaries of the medical services followed by another set of 1,000 patients from Old Cabalan on the second day. The last 1,000 patients came from the 15 other barangays in Olongapo on the last day of the MEDCAP.
The group also conducted sanitation services such as the purification of water in the IRAM Resettlement to make it potable.
“Olongapo City appreciates the extended assistance of the ARF,” Gordon said. “Natuwa rin ang ating mga bisita sa nakita nilang kaayusan at sa aktibong partisipasyon ng ating lokal na pamahalaan, lalong lalo na mula sa mga Barangay natin dito sa Olongapo,” shares Gordon.
The ARF which was established in 1994 was envisioned to be the primary platform for security in the Asia-Pacific through dialogue, consultation and cooperation. The VDR, on the other hand, is a civilian-led, military-supported event. Military participation is humanitarian in nature and under the direction of civilian agencies.
The MEDCAP is part of the event’s major activities that will showcase the ARF member-nations’ positive action in conducting a humanitarian and disaster response exercise involving civilian and military components.
The two sponsoring countries believe that civilian-led, military supported exercise will help improve the level of civilian and military cooperation especially during times of natural disasters. The exercise is geared towards saving lives, alleviating human suffering, and mitigating the effects of natural disasters in the region. PAO
