OLONGAPEÑOS JUBILANT OVER PACMAN’S VICTORY
Olongapeños overflowed with jubilation after Manny ‘’Pacman’’ Pacquaio knocked-0ut British boxer Ricky Hatton in the second round of the ‘’Battle of East and West’’ match on May 2 (May 3 Philippine time) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Olongapo City Convention Center (OCCC) was jampacked for the ‘’Pambansang Kamao’’ as Mayor James ‘’Bong’’ Gordon and City First Lady and Zambales Vice Gov. Anne Marie Gordon with the city councilors, department heads and barangay officials leading the spectators of the live TV broadcast.
Giant screens and monitors had been set-up to allow residents to watch the fight for free courtesy of Mayor Gordon. ‘’Alas-sais pa lamang ng umaga ay nakapila na kami ngunit sulit na sulit naman ang aming pag-aantay dahil hindi kami binigo ni Pacman,’’ said one of Pacquiao’s fan.
‘’Salamat kay Pacman dahil muli na naman niyang pinasaya ang mga Pilipino,’’ said 52-year old PUJ driver Ramon Santos.
It can be recalled that thousands of Olongapeños of all ages were able to watch Pacman’s previous triumph against the boxing legend Oscar dela Hoya held last December 2008 similarly through the free screening at the Olongapo City Convention Center.
Olongapeños cheered as the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer floored the ‘’Hitman’’ twice in the first round ending the fight with a hard left to the jaw that sent Hatton down. The fight ended two (2) minutes, fifty-nine (59) seconds in the second round.
Meanwhile, Pacquaio’s International Boxing Organization junior welterweight title means he has equalled the record of having won six (6) world crowns in different divisions.
