“A GLORIOUS PAST… A TRIUMPHANT FUTURE”
Olongapo City recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary of independence from the administration of American government.
“All the great cities in the world have humble beginnings. Since the advent of the new world, to the enlightenment and the renaissance in Europe to the post-war periods, cities around the world had their share of tumultuous times. Through strong-willed determination and perseverance, progress was achieved and success was enjoyed,” said Mayor James “Bong” Gordon in his opening message.
The Mayor shared in detail, particularly to the students who were present, the history of Olongapo from being a ‘small village’ to being recognized as one of the ‘highly urbanized cities’ in the country through the contribution and concern of every resident of Olongapo City.
“Also, I would like to take this opportunity to underscore the importance of history and keeping our heritage not only in our minds but also in writing. I challenge the students here, the future leaders of our city to preserve our historical heritage and pass it on to the future generations.”
Mayor Gordon also added, “Like the old adage goes ‘Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan’. We should keep in mind that our history is who we are; A long standing account of our identity and destiny. Let this commemoration be a reminder of our glorious past, a celebration of our culture and heritage as we join hands in forging a brighter future for our city.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Gordon and Postmaster General and CEO Hector R.R. Villanueva of the Philippine Postal Corporation (PhilPost) led the launching and presentation of the Olongapo City Commemorative Stamps.
For the first time, Olongapenos were able to see the stamp which shows the city’s history. To formalize the launch of the commemorative stamps, Mayor Gordon and Postmaster Villanueva signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the day of the anniversary on December 7, 2009 held at the Rizal Triangle Multi-Purpose Center.
The PhilPost will release over twenty-five thousand (25,000) commemorative stamps. This is also the local government’s way of promoting tourism in Olongapo.
