Hanjin launches first oil tanker made in Subic
Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp.-Philippines on Friday unveiled the first oil tanker it manufactured at the Subic Bay Freeport, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) said.
The 114,000-deadweight ton tanker named Leyla K is 241.3 meters long and has a breadth of 44 meters—the largest oil tanker built in the country.
The $68-million Leyka K was purchased by Kaptanoglu Shipping Line, a Turkish company.
At present, the $1.7-billion Hanjin shipyard in Subic is the world’s fourth biggest shipbuilding facility. The shipyard has about 17,000 workers.
Hanjin began construction of this shipyard on February 2006 and delivered its first vessel—container vessel MV Argolikos—on July 2008.
Hanjin had already delivered eight bulk and container vessels and would manufacture an additional 36 ships until 2012. BEN ARNOLD O. DE VERA - Manila Times
