National Disaster Consciousness Month Activities
During the coordinating meeting of the City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC) presided by Angie Layug, director of the Disaster and Management Office, held today at the Olongapo City Convention Center, upcoming trainings, workshops and activities were discussed together with the officials of the 17 baranggays and all concerned local government units and non-government organizations.
In connection with June being the National Disaster Consciousness Month, the CDCC has prepared a training workshop focusing on how to better prepare city residents in dealing with different types of disasters especially with the rainy season just around the corner. A 3-day training course for CDCC and BDCC on Community Based Disaster Risk Management and Mitigation Training-Workshop will be held on June 8-10 at the OCCC to be attended by representatives from the 17 baranggays and local government units.
The safety and wellness of all Olongapenos is always a priority with Mayor Bong Gordon as highlighted in his HELP program. “We cannot put over emphasis on the safety of our people. It is better to be prepared at all times for whatever disaster that might come our way,”Mayor Bong Gordon said in an interview.
According to Mr. Layug, officials of all the 17 Baranggays as well as concerned offices of Olongapo City are welcome to share their proposed activities to their office to be included in the planning of the upcoming training-workshop.
A two hundred thousand pesos (P200,000) donation from the United Nations High Commission on Refugee will fund the implementation of the upcoming trainings and awareness programs the training-workshop will produce.
It can be recalled that Olongapo has been elevated to the Hall Of Fame for receiving 5 times the Gawad Kalasag Award which is a yearly citation given to local government units who exemplifies the best and effective disaster response time.
Some of the upcoming activities for this National Disaster Consciousness Month are the following:, A CL-Wide CSSR/USAR Training for responders in Region 3, WASAR Training aimed to arm emergency responders with knowledge and skill on water and related emergencies, A National Earthquake Simulation Exercise, Simultaneous Earthquake Drills, Mitigation activities for the rainy season/de-clogging and drainage clean-up, Volunteer Organizations/individuals donating blood to PNRC and a regional first-aid and basic life support competition with DCCs in Region 3.
