Olongapo City Mayor James “Bong” Gordon Jr. and First Lady Anne Marie Gordon, chairpersons of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Olongapo City Chapter are encouraging Olongapeños to join the nationwide Red Cross Million Volunteer Run.
The PRC Million Volunteer Run is a program collaborated with the United Nations to mark the year 2011 as the International Year of Volunteers. The said event will be held simultaneously in key cities and municipalities of the country on December 4, 2011. The city of Olongapo will hold a 5-kilometer run on that day.
The PRC Million Volunteer Run is an action for the welfare of humanity--- to create a civilian force of disaster responders and providers of basic assistance like first aid and psychological support.
The Run is combined with ‘143 Red Cross’, which means the PRC will train 44 people in every barangay to compose one (1) leader and 43 members of the response team.
PRC Chairperson Richard J. Gordon said that with united spirit and values of volunteerism, our nation will possess the capacity to defeat disasters that brings havoc to our country.
At times of disasters, Olongapeños know how to unify in response to reduce the risk of life and damage to properties. Local government agencies invest in studies and trainings to upgrade their knowledge and skills in coordinated response.
