‘Cops coddled Subic bars’

SUBIC, Zambales—Residents of a barangay in Subic have complained that prostitution and lewd shows are rampant in the area because of “protection” provided by local authorities and police to bar owners here.

A resident of Barangay Calapandayan, who requested anonymity, said members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Subic and a number of barangay and municipal officials are receiving a weekly payroll from the owners of the bars lining up their town.

Some local officials and members of the police are allegedly receiving at least P4,000 a week for the unhampered operations of bars like Pepe Caca Super Disco, Curacha Club, Georgetown, Kinky Bar, Head N’ Tail Disco and 392 Night Club, which are known for prostitution and lewd shows.

The resident also mentioned the newly opened nightclubs like Luna Club, Sweet 16 KTV Bar and Marteesan’s KTV, which are allegedly owned by an influential Taiwanese.

Residents of the barangay have filed a complaint and are asking the Department of the Interior and Local Government to intervene on the matter since Mayor Jeffrey Khonghun has not acted on their complaints, a resident said.

The resident said they would also ask Chief Supt. Vidal Querol, Police Regional Office 3 director, to relieve the PNP officials in Subic, because of “negligence of duty.”

Alma Bulawan, president of Buklod ng Kababaihan, a group based in Olongapo, which advocates the protection of women, meanwhile, confirmed that prostitution and lewd shows are rampant on Calapandayan Highway.

“It’s [lewd shows] there every night and what is frightening is that the performers on stage are getting younger and younger,” Bulawan said.

According to her, the group has filed a complaint to Mayor Khonghun regarding this but were told, “He can’t do anything about it.”

“It’s there already before my term so I can’t do anything about it,” Bulawan quoted Khonghun as saying.

Bulawan said despite local officials’ apparent lack of interest in addressing the problem, her group plans to join with other groups to lobby for the town mayor to act on the matter.

The Manila Times tried to contact Mayor Khonghun but he was not available for comment
