1,000 cops to secure SEAG venues in Subic

Camp Olivas, Pampanga ` Around 1,000 policemen from different provincial police offices in the region will be deployed in Subic and Angeles City as part of the security measures for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games.

Central Luzon police director Chief Supt. Alejandro Lapinid bared the plan with barely two months left before the country hosts the biggest sports event in the region.

Subic is one of the three satellite venues for the Nov. 27 to Dec. 5 meet along with Bacolod and Cebu.

The former American base is the site of the archery, triathlon, sailing and canoe kayak events while petanque and lawn bowls are to be held at the Hidden Vale Country Club in Clark in Angeles City.

Lapinid said additional police troops will help augment local police in monitoring the activities of foreign visitors including their so-called 'nightlife.'

"We will strictly monitor the activities of every participant to ensure their safety," said Lapinid.

The police official said stricter rules have been agreed upon between the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (Philsoc) and the PNP Task Group to avoid any untoward incident on the duration of the week-long meet.

"No athletes will be allowed to go out of their quarters as they will be confined inside their billeted rooms, while the food and drinks to be served will also undergo sanitary clearances," Lapinid said.

Philsoc officials are arriving in Subic today together with the different Chef de Missions of the 10-member countries to inspect the different hotels and playing venues to be used for the Games.

Aside from hotels, La-pinid said bars and other recreation areas are also included in the final security inspection that ends today.

According to Lapinid, reservations were already made by some foreign delegates at the Montevista Villas in Clark Field in Angeles City. He said the Task Group will talk to hotel officials for the clustering of rooms or villas for every country
