Subic rape case ends, RP-US relations remains same

TACLOBAN CITY -- The trial of Subic rape case victim Nicole rests after the case promulgation is read.
Considering the publicity it has generated, the promulgation is expected to attract a large crowd which would want to hear what the verdict would be. In anticipation of the crowd a contingent of around 200 policemen will be deployed to secure the perimeter of the Makati City Hall. Another set of policemen will be around to secure the alleged rape victim.
The more than yearlong trial which generated a lot of emotions on the country’s citizens will finally deliver the verdict whether the four accused American servicemen will go free or go to jail.
Whatever way the verdict goes, it is clear that the trial was conducted based on due process, transparency and the rule of law.
Accused of raping Nicole are American servicemen Lance Corporals Daniel Smith, Keith Silkwood and Dominc Duplantis and staff SergeantChad Carpenter. Nicole has accused Corporal Daniel Smith of raping her while the three co-accused cheered him on. The Americans have denied the accused with Smith admitting to the court that the rape did not take place as sex was consensual.
Whatever the outcome of the case will not affect the RP-US relations as the case is not about diplomatic relations but on universal justice and the rule of law governing countries. (PIA-8)
