Subic Fish Cages

I am sending you google images of fish cages in Brgy. Cawag, Subic, Zambales so you will be aware of this issue that we have been fighting for several months now. Please take a closer look at the black shades just under the fish cages that are spreading towards the shore lines. This is the silt deposits that is more than 1 meters based on the findings by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

These fish cages have been operating for several years already (by virtue of Sangguniang Bayan resolutions and Mayor's permits) without Environmental Compliance Certificates from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and within an area not demarcated (verified) for fish cage operations by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Despite the Cease and Desist Orders issued by DENR - EMB which were coursed through the Mayor's office, these fish cages still continue to operate and their operators are even asking for extensions.

Continued operations of these fish cages will greatly affect the environment and the livelihood of many fisherfolks who are being prevented from fishing in this area which cover an area of 22 hectares. The operators of these fish cages are not from Subic.

Once and for all the people of Subic and the Subic Bay in general, regardless of political persuasions, within and outside the Philippines must get our act together and stop these fish cages before it's too late.

Their operations is for whose benefit? How much do the operators pay to the municipal government (with official receipts)? How much do they pay for occupying the buildings in the Wawandue Fishport Area in Wawandue, Subic? How much does the Wawandue Fishport pay to the municipal government of Subic? Where are the fishes (bangus) being sold, in Subic or in Manila? Who will clean the silt deposits under the water of about 22 hectares?

People from Subic Bay, UNITE NOW!

Ramon Lacbain II
Resident - Brgy. Wawandue, Subic, Zambales
