Report: DOJ chief's wife eyeing mayoral post in 2010

This early, another political dynasty of sorts is emerging as the wife of justice secretary Raul Gonzalez is reportedly eyeing the mayoralty post in Iloilo City in 2010.

Iloilo-based online site The News Today reported Friday that Dr. Pacita Gonzalez claimed her family is seriously considering fielding her in the 2010 mayoralty race.

“Since Mayor Treñas is now on his third and final term as mayor, I plan to seek the mayoralty seat in the next elections. Aside from the fact that I have the support of around 95% of the city’s 180 barangay captains, I have solid experience in governance to back me up," she said at a hotel in Iloilo City, according to the report.

Mrs. Gonzalez is a former congresswoman of the second district of Zambales province.

If she becomes Iloilo City mayor in 2010, she would keep alive the Gonzalez family’s presence in active government service.

Sec. Gonzalez’s term as justice secretary is co-terminous with the mandate of President Arroyo, who is to step down as president in 2010.

At present, Raul Gonzalez Jr is congressman of the province. His term will also end in 2010.

But should Mrs. Gonzalez decide to run, she may cross paths with Iloilo City vice mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, who is reportedly eyeing the mayoralty post in 2010.

The TNT report said Mabilog accommodated some weeks back the wishes of Sec. Gonzalez on the distribution of committee chairmanships at the city council.

Mabilog is reported to be banking on the Gonzalezes to catapult him to his dream of eventually becoming city mayor in 2010.

When asked about Mabilog’s plans, Mrs. Gonzalez said, “If he wants, he can be my runningmate for vice mayor so that the group would remain solid." - GMANews.TV
