IP Week kicks off one – month SBMA anniversary program

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – A special flag-raising ceremony involving members of the Aeta community in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone recently kicked off the month long 15th anniversary celebration of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).

The participation of members of Subic’s indigenous tribe in the ceremony, where they led in singing the national anthem and pledging allegiance to the flag, was the first since the SBMA was established in 1992.

Two young Aeta girls led act activities during the special flag-raising ceremony: Marichu Famisan and Mary Joy Mesina, both freshmen students of Olongapo City National High School (OCNHS). Took change of the Lupang Hinirang and Panunumpa sa Watawat, respectively.

“We were a little nervous because we seldom get to do this in front of so many people. Not even in school that we get to do this kind of activity. But we are happy just the same to be part of the flag-raising ceremony with SBMA employees,” Famisan and Mesina said.

The Aeta tribesmen , garbed in their traditional loincloth and wrap around dress for the occasion, came from the village of Pastolan, some 15 kilometers away from Subic’s Central business district. “This is our way of recognizing the importance of our Aeta brothers who were the first stakeholders of Subic, and who protected our forests and seas even before his place became an American naval base,” said SBMA administrator Armand Arreza.

The flag-raising went also formally kicked off Subic’s recent observance of Indigenous People’s Week (IP week).

According to SBMA deputy administrator for corporate communications Maria Asuncion Fernando, the IP Week in Subic included a courtesy call by top SBMA officials on Aeta tribal leaders in Patolan, story-telling sessions by volunteers fro elementary school children, and a Pastolan immersion program for SBMA employees and their families.

The IP Week would be followed by the Community Week, which would focus on comminities around the Freeport zone; the SBMA Employees Week from November 12 to 17, the LGU Week from November 19 to 24 ; and the Locators Week from November 26 to 30.

Subic’s IP Week program had actually started with a tour for 112 Aeta children who boarded two SBMA doubled-decker tourist buses to visit the Zoobic Zafari and the Jungle Environmental Survival Training (JEST) Camp, where some Aeta men folk as tourist assistants and instructors.
