PUBLIC HEARING AGAINST LEWD SHOWS
City Councilor Gina Perez led a public hearing for the proposed amendments to City Ordinance No. 28, series of 2005 or the anti-Lewd Shows Ordinance held recently at the Sanggunian Session Hall.
Attended by Vice Mayor Cynthia Cajudo, City Councilors John Carlos Delos Reyes and Jong Cortez, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation President Cheenee Hoya and City Administrator Ferdie Magrata, the said public hearing was likewise participated in by barangay officials, representatives from the Olongapo City Police Office (OCPO), Non-Government Organizations (NGO’s) and owners of concerned establishments.
“Because of the feedbacks that we are receiving regarding the vagueness of this particular ordinance, we, in the City Council would like to be specific and thereby remove unclear provisions of it,” Perez said.
In the hearing, Vice Mayor Cajudo and the city officials appealed to bar and disco owners in the city to cooperate and contribute to the city’s changed image from a “sin city” to a “scene city”.
“We already experienced the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. Based on the Bible, ashes means cleansing and we are already cleansed. Do we want to go back to the days of old?” Cajudo appealed.
City officials also reminded bar and disco owners that aside from profit earning, they also have the responsibility to protect the dignity of women.
Meanwhile, Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. fully supports the initiative of Perez and the City Council to put more teeth on the ordinance against lewd shows. “I am supportive of any ordinance that would, in effect, protect women, minors and morality,” Mayor Gordon said.
It can be recalled that an anti-prostitution ordinance in the city has been earlier approved by the council last year. PAO/jpb
