Triple A feats for 13-year-old tanker
SUBIC, Zambales, Philippines—The waves of La Union have made this 13-year-old tanker a promising prospect for the national team.
Kristopher Witt somehow took the luster out of Baguio City’s dominance after posting international standard clockings in three swimming events yesterday in the Central Northern Luzon qualifying games of the 3rd Philippine Olympic Festival.
Witt pocketed four golds in the 100-meter freestyle, 400m individual medley, 200m IM and 200m butterfly in the boys’ 13-14 years bracket.
Witt caught the attention of swimming officials when the sophomore high school from Brain and Heart of a Christian School registered triple A clockings in the 400m IM, 200m IM and 100m free.
Triple A standards indicate that a swimmer can compete on the same level with other swimmers his age worldwide.
Witt beat the international standard time of 59.90 seconds with his 58.52 clocking in the 100m free. The Palarong Pambansa veteran also surpassed the standard in the 400m IM (5:12.60) and 200m IM (2:27.30) with times of 5:06.11 and 2:23.63, respectively.
Witt outshone province-mate John Resty Rellama in the 100m free, who also registered a triple A time of 58.67.
“I practice in the pool and on the beach every day so that someday I will become a member of the national team,” said Witt, the only child of a doctor and nurse residing in San Fernando City, La Union, which is famous for its beaches.
Bulacan also created a splash in the pool when Jessie Khing Lacuna and Lorelie Lora collected a combined six gold medals.
A member of the national training pool, Lacuna ruled the boys’ 15 and over 400m IM, 100m free and 100m back while Lora also nailed three golds in the same events in the girls’ 13-14 age bracket. By June Navarro - Philippine Daily Inquirer
