'Cosme' intensifies, signal 1 up
'Cosme' intensifies, signal 1 up over 3 areas; low pressure area intensifies into cyclone
State weather forecasters hoisted Storm Signal 1 over three areas in Southern Luzon as tropical depression "Cosme" intensified Thursday night.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that as of 10 p.m., "Cosme" was 390 kilometers west of Calapan City in Mindoro.
It also said the active low-pressure area in the Philippine territory has intensified into a tropical depression and was named "Dindo."
"Tropical Depressions 'Cosme' and 'Dindo' will enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Luzon and Western Visayas. Residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes are advised to take all the necessary precautions against possible flashfloods and landslides," it said.
Residents along the coastal areas of Luzon and Western Visayas are alerted on big waves generated by the two cyclones, it added.
Placed under Storm Signal 1 were Northern Palawan, Occidental Mindoro and Lubang Island.
Pagasa said "Cosme" packed maximum sustained winds of 60 kph near the center and was moving north at 7 kph.
By Friday evening, it was forecast to be 420 km west-northwest of Calapan City or 250 km west-southwest of Iba, Zambales.
Come Saturday evening it is expected to be 230 km northwest of Iba, Zambales. By Sunday evening, it is forecast to be 80 km north-northwest of Laoag City. - GMANews.TV
