Archbishop Cruz should apologize - solons
“It could have been avoided if he was man and humble enough to apologize to those poor Pagcor employees. It keeps me wondering why he didn’t say sorry because a man of the cloth and a gentleman would have done the right thing," said Zambales Rep. Milagros Magsaysay.
The libel case against Lingayan-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz could have been avoided if he was humble enough to apologize to state workers whom he said acted as Guest Relations Officers (GRO) during the celebration of First Gentleman Mike Arroyo’s birthday in 2004, two pro-administration lawmakers said Wednesday.
This came after a Manila court ordered the arrest of Cruz even as it set a P10,000 bail in connection with the libel case filed by Pagcor female marketing assistants.
Cruz, a vocal critic of the administration, posted bail Wednesday.
“It could have been avoided if he was man and humble enough to apologize to those poor Pagcor employees. It keeps me wondering why he didn’t say sorry because a man of the cloth and a gentleman would have done the right thing," said Zambales Rep. Milagros Magsaysay.
Even as she said this, Magsaysay pointed out alleged inaccuracies raised by the prelate in his column.
“He called these upright women GROs who were forced to wear mini skirts and gyrate in front of men when nothing of that sort happened," she said.
“If you were the child or the mother or the husband of one of these professionals, would you have felt bad that before the whole country somebody stopped short of calling the one you a love a prostitute?" she asked.
For his part, Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante - a bishop of the group called Bible Mode - also suggested that Cruz should have been contrite enough to say sorry.
“If they were forced (to wear skimpy shirts), I don’t think its proper for Bishop Cruz to pass judgment immediately. He should apologize for that mistake. Tapusin niya na iyan," he said.
The case stemmed from Cruz’s article published on newspapers sometime in June 2004.
He wrote that the Pagcor employees acted as “pitiful GROs" (guest relations officers) during a birthday party of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo in 2004.
Last month, the DOJ filed libel charges against Cruz for “falsely and maliciously imputing to them (Pagcor employees) acts that have caused dishonor to, and besmirched their reputation as women when he described them in the said article."
The case was filed before the Manila RTC by Prosecutor Jessica Junsay-Ong.
Archbishop Cruz believes that Malacañang was behind the filing of libel charges against him, saying that a Manila prosecutor had already junked the complaint filed by a group of lady marketing assistants of Pagcor.
The complainants filed a motion for reconsideration before the DOJ, which, in a resolution, then approved the filing of libel charges against Cruz. - GMANews.TV
