'Cosme' threatens Luzon - Pagasa

It was moving north at 7 kph and was forecast to be 320 km southwest of Iba, Zambales

The active low-pressure area west of Southern Luzon intensified into a tropical depression Wednesday afternoon and may bring flash floods and landslides to Luzon and Western Visayas.

In its 5 p.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) code-named the tropical depression "Cosme."

Pagasa said "Cosme" will interact with an active low-pressure area near Aurora province to bring rains over Luzon and Western Visayas.

Both disturbances will enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Luzon and the western section of Visayas, it said.

"Residents in low lying areas and near mountain slopes over the said areas are advised to take all the necessary precautions against possible flashfloods and landslides," it said.

As of 4 p.m., Pagasa said "Cosme" was 400 kilometers west southwest of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center.

It was moving north at 7 kph and was forecast to be 320 km southwest of Iba, Zambales Thursday afternoon; 240 km west of Iba, Zambales Friday afternoon; and 190 km west northwest of Dagupan City or 240 km southwest of Laoag City Saturday afternoon.

No public storm warning signals were raised, however.

On the other hand, Pagasa said the active low-pressure area (ALPA) was estimated at 140 km east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora.

"Tropical depression 'Cosme' and the active low pressure area will enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Luzon and the western section of Visayas," Pagasa said. - GMANews.TV
