First Subic-made ship set for June delivery

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT - Finishing touches are underway for the delivery of the first-ever Subic-made ocean-going vessel set for delivery to a Greek shipping company in June.

Chairman Feliciano Salonga of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority said this is the first vessel built by Korean firm Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp.-Philippines at the Redondo Peninsula shipyard. He said the US$60-million ship took less than a year to be built.

“Other shipbuilders would have taken at least 18 months after cutting the steel, to launch the same size of ship,” Salonga added.

According to him, the ship is temporarily identified as PN-001 but will be formally named by President Arroyo in June after its outfitting and sea trials are done. After the naming ceremony, the ship will officially be delivered to Dioryx Maritime Corporation in Greece.

The ship is designed for an optimum speed of 24.5 knots, or more than 45 kph. The PN-001 will be the first of the 16 container vessels of similar specifications to be built by Hanjin in Subic.

Salonga said the 16 ships ordered from Hanjin would cost a total of close to $1 billion, with the price of each ship costing $60 million.

“This is a huge contribution to the local economy,” he said.

Hanjin, which is one of the biggest shipbuilders in the world today, has an investment of about $1.7 billion for its shipyard project in Subic. About 5,000 workers benefited both directly and indirectly from the ship builder.

Hanjin said earlier that it is also planning to build a bigger shipyard in Mindanao to accommodate more orders for new ships. -Jess Malabanan
