So leads Subic favorites’ march; Salubre draws Kuzobov

SUBIC -- ROOMMATES WESLEY SO AND Julio Catalino Sadorra led the favorites’ romp at the start of the 1st Subic International Open chess championship at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center on Saturday.

So, the world’s youngest Grandmaster at 14, trounced Indonesian Sonjaya Deni in just 21 moves of a Bishop Opening while Sadorra, who shared first place in the recent 2nd Philippine Open held at the same venue, downed China’s Xu Tong later in the night.

Filipino Grandmasters Eugene Torre and Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor, Indonesian GM Susanto Megaranto and Myanmar’s GM Win Lay Zaw and GM-elect Jayson Gonzales also scored victories.

A well-rested Torre subdued Fide Master Adrian Pacis while Villamayor, who gave up his teaching job in Singapore to resume his playing career, tamed junior star Karl Ochoa.

The third-seeded Megaranto, spearhead of the Indonesian contingent, beat China’s Yang Kaiqi while Zaw thwarted Efren Bagamasbad.

Gonzales, on the other hand, subdued junior sensation Jan Emmanuel Garcia.

It was untitled Jayson Salubre, however, who created a ripple when he held top seed GM Yuriy Kuzubov of Ukraine to a draw in 33 moves of a Queen’s Gambit-Slav variation.

The 23-year-old Salubre, UAAP board 2 gold medalist for De La Salle in the UAAP 2006 season, forced a perpetual check against the 18-year-old Kuzubov, highest-rated in the nine-round Swiss System tournament with an Elo of 2603.

GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio also settled for a draw with countryman Fernandito Pialan.

So, the Dubai Open and Battle of GMs champion, stayed here after the Philippine Open for a much-needed rest after more than two months of playing in tournaments.

“We just stayed in the room and watched TV,” said So.

Other first round victors include Filipino IMs Ronald Bancod and Barlo Nadera and Indoensian IM Sadikin Irwanto and FM Wahomo Awan.

IM John Paul Gomez was also held to a draw by Rolando Andador. By Roy Luarca - Philippine Daily Inquirer
