TEAM ‘GAPO WINS 17 MEDALS IN THE POF 2008
Olongapo Team hauled a total of seventeen(17) medals in Taekwondo, Arnis, Aquatics, Archery, Muay and Gymnastics in the recently concluded Philippine Olympic Festival (POF) in Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental.
“We are very proud of our athletes because we know they have tried their best to get these medals,” said Angie Layug, city sports coordinator referring to the five(5) golds, six (6) silvers and six (6) bronzes the delegation won.
The city delegation composed of 48 athletes advanced to the national championship in Cagayan de Oro by winning the Central Northern Luzon (CNL) qualifying games earlier this year.
The participation of the team in the 2008 Phil. Olympic Festival (POF) supports the Olongapo City Sports Council’s talent identification program, a long-term athletes development program for the benefit of young potential athletes in preparation for future Olympic Games.
Mayor Gordon’s HELPS program includes Sports as one of his priorities. “We have potential great athletes in Olongapo, let us support them,” Mayor Gordon said.
