12 ASIAN PLAYERS TO PARTICIPATE IN SUBIC-OLONGAPO OPEN
Olongapo is gearing up for the staging of the first Subic-Olongapo Open Pool Championship on April 21 to 23, 2009 at the Olongapo City Convention Center.
According to the website of Raya Sports, the tournament organizer, the anticipated event has already drawn the participation of 12 Asian players this early. It has been reported that seven players from Indonesia, two each from Japan and Malaysia, and one from Thailand are the first foreigners to sign up for the prestigious ten-ball event.
The foreign players are Indonesians Ricky Yang, S. Bewi, M. Sulfikri, Jimmy Jusman, William Ipaenem, Rudi Susanto and Imran Ibrahim; Japanese Kenji Taguchi and Ryousuke Muruka; Malaysians Amir Ibrahim and Benjamin Lee and Thai Amnuay Porn Chotipong.
Also, Mayor James “Bong” Gordon Jr. is grooming homegrown talents to represent the city in the said tournament. The champion of the 1st ever Mayor James Gordon, Jr.’s Cup slated on March 28-29, 2009 at the Jordan Billiards Hall along Gordon Avenue in the city will have the chance to be its representative to the main tournament.
The Subic-Olongapo Open is the first leg of the 2009 Philippine Pool Tour which will have two stages. Stage 1, which is the elimination round, will be played at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City from April 18 and 19; and Stage 2, the main tournament, will be held in Olongapo.
A top prize of $10,000 and the grand trophy donated by Sen. Richard Gordon await the winner of the Subic-Olongapo Open.
The event is hosted by the Olongapo City Government and Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.
