Now in its 19th year, the Gawad Parangal 2009 - Search for Ten Outstanding Students of Olongapo City commended this year’s student-champions on March 27, 2009 at Ferdinand M. Aristorenas Hall, City Hall Complex.

Spearheaded by the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), the Department of Education (DepEd) and Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr., the search is intended to encourage students to show their talents, ability to lead, and their involvement not only in schools but also in society. Awardees were officially nominated by officials in public and private elementary and secondary schools in Olongapo City.

The following student-awardees have shown their determination and have managed to rise above the challenges to inspire others: Jalan Joy B. Umbina (SPED-G), Samara Therese M. Palanca (Olongapo Wesley School), Girard Paolo Rosales (St. Joseph College), John Carlo A. Beltran (SPED-G), Hiromi James C. De Asisi (Olongapo Wesley School) for the Elementary Level.

“You all possess the traits and characteristics which are worthy of emulation. Gamitin ninyo ang angkin ninyong kagalingan at ialay ito sa kapakinabangan ng ating lungsod, at maging ng ating bayan,” said Gordon.

The Screening Committee which decided who among the nominees were deserving was composed of representatives from DepEd, YMCA, Sangguniang Kabataan, Boy/Girl Scouts of Olongapo, at Sangguniang Panlungsod, at NGOs.
