Food Supplements for Undernourished Children
Didier Ladriere, owner of DLA Naturals Inc. approached and asked for the permission of Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. to hand out free Spirulina Food Supplements to one hundred (100) undernourished children.
In line with this, Mayor Gordon tasked City Health Officer Dr. Arnildo Tamayo and City Nutrition Action Officer Riche Eve A. Torralba intensively monitor and record the weight progress of the undernourished children who will receive the said supplement.
Spirulina is the common name for human and animal food supplements produced primarily from two species of cyanobacteria: Arthrospira platensis, and Arthrospira maxima. Spirulina is cultivated around the world, and is used as a human dietary supplement as well as a whole food and is available in tablet, flake, and powder form. Spirulina contains complete proteins with essential amino acids, fatty acids and vitamins.
The United Nations World Food Conference in 1974 lauded Spirulina as the 'best food for the future'. Recognizing the inherent potential of Spirulina in the sustainable development agenda, several Member States of the United Nations came together to form an intergovernmental organization by the name of IIMSAM, the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-Algae Spirulina Against Malnutrion to make Spirulina a key driver to eradicate malnutrition, achieve food security and bridge the health division throughout the world.
