Construction of the New Kalaklan Lighthouse Bridge and Security Plaza

Effective February 15, 2010 Kalaklan Lighthouse Bridge will be closed to all kinds of vehicle traffic to give way to the construction of a new bridge and security plaza.

On March 1, 2010 the said bridge will also be closed to pedestrians.

Vehicles and pedestrians going in and out of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone are advised to take any of the following alternate routes: Rizal Bridge, 14th st bridge or the Tipo Expressway.

Schedule of Construction

Start of Construction : 05 January 2010 (mobilization)

Date of Completion : 05 January 2011

Closure of the Existing Bridge to Vehicles : 15 February 2010

Notice of Closure will be posted at the approaches of the existing Bridge.

Closure of the Existing Bridge to Pedestrian : 01 March 2010

Notice of Closure will be posted at the approaches of the existing Bridges and on major throughfares of the city

Contractor: R. D. Policarpio and Company, Inc.

Construction Supervision Consultant: Design Science, Inc.

Affected daily average vehicle traffic : 2,500

Affected daily average pedestrian traffic : 520

Features of the New Kalaklan Bridge and Security Plaza:

Two-lane concrete bridge with covered sidewalk;

Entrance and security gate both for vehicles and pedestrians;

Parking areas for Trucks and Trailers going in and coming out of the Freeport; and

Administration Building for offices of the SBMA Treasury, Seaport, Law Enforcement and other SBMA Departments.

A conference was held at SBMA boardroom last Tuesday to discuss effects of the bridge closure. Officials of Olongapo City led by Mayor Gordon, Councilors Cortez and Piano, and leaders of business groups led by Bong Pineda for the city and Danny Piano for Subic Freeport were appraised by SBMA on the project. A follow-up meeting is set at Kong's restaurant next week to come up with mutually agreeable solution to the expected traffic buildup due to the said bridge closure.
