80,000 Filipino-trained seafarers, crew deployed to int’l shipping companies

The International Development Environment Shipping System (IDESS), a well-known seafarers and crew training center all over the world, had already deployed 80,000-trained Filipino seafarers and crews since it came in the country about 20 years ago.

Robert Rayner, IDESS chief executive officer (CEO), said that the deployed trained Filipino seafarers and crew were all competence to their respective jobs in the ships as they were trained for that purpose.

Rayner said that the training center won’t sacrifice its standard quality because of profits as it only teaches eight (8) to 12 students per training period.

“The fewer the students has the training center the better as they can participate and learn the things the trainers teach them and they can be accommodated to use the ship equipment

and other instruments,” Rayner said.

So far so good, the trained Filipino seafarers and crew were noted of their excellence wherever they landed jobs here and abroad, he added.

The company came to the country in 1995 and founded the training center in Intramuros, Manila. As the years went by, IDESS expanded to the Subic Bay as the place is suited for training center for the Filipino seafarers and crew.

The training center offers hands-on courses such as sea survival, first aid, fire fighting, freefall lifeboat, ship security, navigation, assessment tool, management tool, and DVD case study. Its on-line E-learning training courses include liquefied natural gas (LNG), petroleum measurement, accident investigation, elementary first aid for seafarers, fire safety for ships and personal sea survival.

As the problem of sea pirates continue to rise, the training center also offers anti-piracy subject but on the defensive aspect only as the offensive is taught by the policemen or the navy men.

“Though we only teach the defensive aspect not the offensive because it is the work of the policemen or navy men to foil any attempt of the pirates to hi-jack the ship,” Rayner said.

In the country, there are several training centers that are sprouting but IDESS and WARTSILA are two training centers known for its excellence.

For its part, WARTSILA also is offering hands-on courses such as basic engineering like ZA40S, Alfa Laval purifiers, woodward governor calibrator; nautical courses like ship handling, basic ice navigation, and many more. By DANNY Q. JUNCO -mb.com.ph
