US PEACE CORPS DIRECTOR AARON S. WILLIAMS SA OLONGAPO


Ipinagdiriwang ang ika-50 taon ng US Peace Corps sa Pilipinas at bilang bahagi ng paggunita dumating sa bansa si US Peace Corps Director Aaron S. Williams nitong Nobyemre 4.

Sa lungsod ng Olongapo, malugod na sinalubong ni City Mayor James “Bong” Gordon Jr. at dating Zambales Vice-Governor First Lady Anne Gordon si Williams at Country Director US Peace Corps-Philippines Denny Robertson sa kanilang pagbisita nitong Nobyembre 5, 2011.

Kasama rin sa mga sinalubong nina Mayor Gordon, FL Anne at city government employees ang staff ng US Peace Corps-Washington na sina Jeffrey West, Elisa Montoya at Esther Benjamin.

Binisita ni Williams at ng kanyang mga kasama ang mga naulilang kabataan sa Social Development Center na nasa pangangasiwa ni City Social Welfare and Development Officer Gene Eclarino.

Naroon din ang social workers ng lungsod at ang US Peace Corps Volunteers na sina Kevin Matlock, Lucy Craft, Rachel Elizabeth Kooy at Steven Sierra.



Masayang nakisalamuha si Williams sa mga kabataang babae na gumagawa ng artworks at handicraft. Naging maramdamin naman ang ilang dalagita sa paglalarawan ng kanilang mga gawa.


Magugunitang nagsimula ang progama ng Peace Corps sa Pilipinas noong taong 1961. Noon ding taon pinasimulan ito ng dating US President John F. Kennedy na may 123 volunteers na tumutulong sa paghubog ng komunidad sa pamamagitan ng pagtuturo ng English, Science at Mathematics.

“Peace Corps volunteers in Olongapo bring happy memories and experiences especially with the children who learn from them,” pahayag ni First Lady Anne.

“The Peace Corps program in the Philippines is one of our greatest in the world,” wika ni Williams.
