Palace eyes Diaz as compromise appointee to top SBMA position
By BEN R. ROSARIO, MB
Malacañang is reportedly considering the appointment of Undersecretary Renato V. Diaz as chairman of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) as a solution to the squabble for the post among Zambales politicians.
This surfaced as business groups and local government units in Central Luzon issued appeals to President Arroyo to consider Diaz, presidential assistant for Central Luzon, for appointment as the next SBMA chief.
Among the groups endorsing the appointment of Diaz to the Subic post are the Subic Taiwan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Clark Investors and Locators Association Inc. Both groups passed separate resolutions for the purpose.
Diaz is a former two-term congressman of Nueva Ecija. During his congressional term, he became chairman of the House of Representatives’ committee on ways and means.
He is being considered as the best compromise that may put an end to the feud between the Gordons and the Magsaysays who have been lobbying for their respective nominees to the position left vacant by former SBMA chairman Francisco Licuanan.
Senator Richard Gordon has been pushing for the appointment of his protégé as the next chairman of the SBMA which he (Gordon) used to head. The administration lawmaker reportedly threatened to sever his alliance with President Arroyo unless his nominee is appointed to the post.
However, Gordon’s appointee was reportedly rejected by his political foes, Rep. Mitos Magsaysay and her father-in-law, Zambales Governor Vic Magsaysay.
Congresswoman Magsaysay, who defeated Gordon’s wife, former
Olongapo City Mayor Kate Gordon, in last year’s congressional contest, has reportedly aired fears that the entry of Gordon’s protégé could spell problems to the automobile-conversion industry which, despite encountering legal difficulties, has been thriving.
Several Palace officials believe that the appoinment of Diaz to SBMA may calm down the two feuding Arroyo allies. Thus, he could be the best option to head the agency.
"Presidential Assistant Renato V. Diaz has vast experience in manufacturing, finance, taxation, corporate management, promotion and was a former congressman, thus, making him a competent appointee to this very important position," the Clark Investors and Locators Association Inc. said.
Taiwanese locators at the Subic Freeport Zone have also aired support for the appointment of Diaz, saying that the former solon can be the best replacement of Licuanan who quit because he could no longer stand the pressure of being caught between two political groups in Zambales.
