Subic smugglers use gov't vehicles

The unabated smuggling activities here will not stop unless officials of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authorities and the Bureau of Customs seriously work hand in hand.

Reports said smugglers have adopted a new modus operandi in bringing undeclared goods out of the Freeport by using government vehicles or red plate vehicles via the main gates of the freeport.

Last Saturday at about 7 p.m., a dirty white Revo van (SAJ-590) carrying highly-taxable wines and liquors passed through the main gate without being checked by the security guards, BoC policemen and monitoring team officials.

Policemen tipped off of the incident pursued the vehicle and caught up with it on Magsaysay Drive in Olongapo City.

Police probers said the undeclared cargo came from the Ralph's Wine, a Freeport locator. The receipt showed the items were for 600 pieces of Tall Glass which are dutiable and taxable items.

Meanwhile, PJ learned that smuggled used cars are now sold openly in Central Luzon and Metro Manila.

BoC sources said big numbers of converted right hand vehicles are being illegally shipped in through this freeport and sold to car dealers at low prices.

Used cars registration and compliance permits issued by the Customs Vehicle Importation Compliance Monitoring Unit reportedly should come from SBMA.

The government is losing at least P1 billion in revenues from smugglers.
