Wistron to hire 1,000 factory workers in Subic

By Anthony Deleon, INQ7.net

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – The Taiwanese company Wistron InfoComm Corp. is hiring 1,000 factory workers for its plant here, it was learned Friday.

Administrator Armand Arreza of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) said Wistron's expansion is a sign that the free port is becoming more attractive to foreign investors again.

"A considerable number of foreign business missions have already visited Subic to learn about the free port and our business climate here. We are keen on attracting them to locate here so we could create more job opportunities for residents of nearby communities, as well as spur economic growth for the rest of the country," he said.

Wistron is subsidiary of Acer Computers and makes laptop computers, motherboards and peripherals, fax machines, integrated circuits, microelectronic, and software for the brands Acer, IBM, and Hitachi.

According to Mary Ann Pascual, evaluator of Wistron's labor center, some 2,000 applicants from Olongapo, Zambales, and Bataan submitted their resumes in Friday's mini job fair. She said the company needs 1,000 production operators due to the increasing demand in the global market.

Last June, Wistron transferred its assembly manufacturing of personal digital assistants (PDAs) from China to Subic, making an additional capital infusion of 738 million pesos.
