1,000 factory workers needed in Subic

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT -- The Wistron Infocomm Corp., thru the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Labor Department, yesterday held a mini job fair for 1,000 factory workers at Building 608, near the Main Gate here.

"The SBMA is currently in a good pace in terms of attracting more foreign investors. Actually, a considerable number of foreign business missions have already visited Subic to learn about the Freeport and our business climate here, and we are keen on attracting them to locate here so we could create more job opportunities for residents of nearby communities, as well as spur economic growth to the rest of the country," SBMA Administrator Armand C. Arreza said.

Some 2,000 aspirants submitted their resumes during the mini job fair in hopes of landing a job.

Mary Ann Pascual, Evaluator of Wistron-Labor Center, said that Wistron is in need of 1,000 production operators due to the increasing demand in the global market.

Pascual added that the job fair is only for Wistron. However, they also accepted job applications for those applying with other companies as well. She said that if Wistron did not meet the specific number of applicants, the job fair would possibly be extended.

Wistron manufactures laptop computers, mother boards and peripherals, fax machines, integrated circuits, microelectronic and softwares for various computer brands. Last June, it has expanded its operation shifting its assembly manufacturing of personal digital assistants (PDAs) from China into Subic with an additional infusion of P738 million.

Applicants consisting of residents from nearby communities like Olongapo, Zambales and Bataan came to try their luck at the job fair.

The age preference for applicants is between 18 to 30 years old and one-year completion in college is required by the company to qualify.

Formerly known as ACER, Wistron Infocomm Corp. is located at the Subic Bay Industrial Park, Subic Bay Freeport an area originally developed for exclusive use of Taiwanese companies but was also opened to other foreign investors.
