Kenney lauds Subic’s vision, rapid growth

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT --- Coming to Subic for the first time in her present stint as the country’s top US envoy, U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Anne Kenney proved to be impressed with her visit to the Subic Bay Freeport and the changes it has made since its conversion from being one of the largest foreign US military base to a Freeport and Special Economic Zone.

The visit is part of the ambassador’s drive to meet the many partnerships and initiatives that the US government has in the region, in areas as widely varied as trade and investment, and health and family services.

"I am not the Ambassador to Manila, I think its part of my duty to go around and see and know the different parts of this country," she said.

When asked as to how she finds the Freeport, Kenney shared that the place was phenomenal in its vision.

"This place is fabulous. It has such a beautiful setting and is very phenomenal in its vision to be at par with the fast changing world," the US Ambassador shared.

Kenney was met by top officials from the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) led by its Chairman Feliciano Salonga, Chief Administrator Armand Arreza and their Deputy Administrators.

During her meeting, she was given a full business briefing on current projects and other business concerns here in the Freeport.

Also present were officials coming from the nearby areas like Zambales Governor Vic Magsaysay Jr., 1st District Congresswoman Mitos Magsaysay and Olongapo City Mayor James "Bong" Gordon Jr.

She was also able to meet and talk to the different American businessmen currently based here. The local Chamber of Commerce, headed by its President John Corcoran (Ocean Adventure Marine Park) was also able to meet Kenney and discuss important business issues concerning American businesses in the Freeport.

SBMA Chairman Salonga said he was equally pleased with the good words that Kenney has said about Subic, further adding that her visit bolsters the confidence of the US businesses present in the Freeport.

"We’re glad that Ambassador Kenney had good words and praises about Subic. Her visit here has also boosted the confidence of the American business community here," Salonga noted.

Kenney, who holds the distinction of being the first female US Ambassador to the country, was previously assigned as ambassador to Ecuador. She was handpicked by Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice to succeed Francis Ricciardone, who left in the middle of last year.

In the capital, she served as director of the State Department Operations Center, a member of the National Security Council staff at the White House, and political-military officer in the Office of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Affairs
