SBMA seizes P25-M worth of 'hot vehicles'

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT - Officials of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority and operatives of the Subic Task Force Monday seized three brand-new BMW X5 sports utility vehicles and 16 others totaling P25 million believed to have been smuggled at the former naval supply depot compound.

Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Chairman Feliciano Salonga and Subic Task Force Chief Gen. Jose Calimlim led SBMA officials in opening six 40-footer container vans that were reportedly abandoned in the compound.

The Subic task force also presented to media a Honda racing car costing P1.5 million, three Japanese-made vans, seven Kia and a Hyundai sedan from Korea, and four small pickups also from Korea.

"The BMWs are worth around P5.5 million each, in all this amounts around P25 million in street value," Calimlim said.

Chairman Feliciano Salonga said that the shipment was originally declared as chemicals for manufacturing polyester and plastic products, "but it turned out to be vehicles."

"What makes this suspicious is that there are no companies here in Subic that engage in this kind of business," Salonga told The Manila Times.

The vehicles will be auctioned soon.

Most of the shipments, including several scooters, were consigned to Subic Acropolis Inc., which, according to the SBMA has been suspended for suspected involvement in smuggling inside the Freeport Zone. Anthony Bayarong ABS CBN NEWS

  • Karamihan ng locator sa Freeport ay smuggler. Kung sino and hindi kakampi, yun and huhulihin.
