US, Canada-based Filipino consuls laud progress in Subic Bay Freeport
An eight-man team of officers from different consular offices in Canada and the United States recently visited the Freeport and its nearby areas and were pleased over the development they witnessed.
The team, headed by Jose Brillantes, Philippine Ambassador to Canada, was amazed with the progress at the Subic Freeport since it was transformed from being a US naval military facility into the country's premier Freeport and Special Economic Zone.
"We have just finished a familiarization tour of Manila and our party decided on visiting Subic Bay and what it has been up to since it was turned into a Freeport," Brillantes said.
He added that their visit to Subic is part of the 2nd Ambassadors and Consuls General Tour of the Philippines, a program that is being spearheaded by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The delegation was given a full tour of the Freeport, which included a glimpse at the area's busy industrial sector and a look at the top tourist destinations.
They were later met at a hosted dinner by officials of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) headed by Chairman Feliciano G. Salonga and Administrator and CEO Armand C. Arreza.
Salonga welcomed the officials and pointed out that their visit to the Freeport allows them the opportunity to see and witness the beauty that is Subic.
"We are very honored that you have personally chosen to visit the Subic Freeport. We hope that you can help spread the word about its beauty and opportunities to our fellow countrymen abroad who are thinking about investing or visiting the country," he said.
Arreza, for his part, briefed the officials on the latest developments on the Freeport's impressive figure postings for the first semester of 2006.
He also shared the entry of major foreign investments like Korean Shipbuilding giant Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC) which is building a 2.3-million square meter shipbuilding facility in Sitio Agusuhin, Subic, Zambales.
Arreza said, "Subic has achieved immense progress and has grown to be an ideal business site within the Asian region and, at the same time, managed to package itself as a major tourist destination."
Joining the ambassador in Subic Bay were Consul Generals Rowena Sanchez (San Francisco), Salvador Cabugao (Montreal), Cecille Rebong (New York), Blecila Cabrera (Chicago), Teresita Mendiola (Guam), and Esmeralda Agpulos (Canada). (PNA)
