Govt allocates P83.8-b fund for super regions
EXPECT a massive infrastructure buildup in the super regions in 2007.
With deliberation on the proposed P1.136-trillion national budget already progressing in Congress, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita says the blueprint for infrastructure development, amounting to some P83.8 billion, enhances the prospects for much improved living conditions.
This translates to more job opportunities and broader social and economic benefits for all, said Ermita, who pointed out that this is merely in keeping with President Gloria Macagapal Arroyo’s pledge to develop the North Luzon AgriBusiness Quadrangle, Luzon Urban Beltway, Central Philippines, AgriBusiness Mindanao and the Cyber Corridor into core centers of economic recovery.
The bulk of the infrastructure fund, amounting to P42.9 billion, will go to building 3,521 km of roads and bridges; P21.8 billion to declogging road bottlenecks in the Luzon Urban Beltway; P250 million for the Subic-Clark road network; P9.9 billion to improve arterial and secondary roads and bridges; P7.9 billion for research on construction materials and preventive maintenance; P2.2 billion as subsidy for Metro Rail Transit 3; P3.8 billion for the nautical highway and P3.1 billion for road projects to enhance the tourism industry.
Another P2.8 billion for right-of-way problems in road building; P1.9 billion for water transport services and P6.4 billion to build 1,312 flood control systems to ease the effects of floods caused by bad weather.
The mega projects in the pipeline is expected to generate more jobs during the construction period. Beyond construction, these projects would boost growth of sectors they cover, tourism included.
