5 'bus robbers' nabbed

Five suspected members of a notorious robbery syndicate victimizing passengers of buses plying North Luzon Expressway (Nlex) were arrested by policemen here Wednesday morning.

Arrested were Manuel Nablo Cabansan, 29, of 11th Avenue, Caloocan City; Nonedo Cabansan Barquez, 21, of Tenement, Taguig City; Marciano Mabag Cabansan, 22, of Fairview, Quezon City; Ramon Labadong Cabansan, 23, of Cainta, Rizal; and Mark Anthony Bolito Pacayra, 29, of Pateros, Metro Manila.

Senior Inspector Luisito Tan, Dau Community Police Assistance Center (Compac) commander, said his men confiscated two caliber .45 pistols, two caliber .9mm pistols, a fragmentation grenade and two six-inch knives from the suspects.

Mabalacat Police Chief Renato Soria said they collared the suspects at the Mabalacat Bus Terminal.

Soria said the suspects belong to the "Leysam" robbery hold-up gang operating in Metro Manila and nearby areas in Central Luzon.

Prior to the suspects' arrest, a woman reported to the Dau Compac that she spotted a group of robbers inside a Victory Liner bus that was then bound for Manila.

The informant recognized the suspects as the ones who robbed a bus along Nlex on Oct. 5, 2006 where more than P400,000 worth of valuables and cash were carted away.

Soria said they immediately conducted a search operation inside the reported bus, which led to the arrest of the five suspects.

Police found one of the guns recovered from the suspects was government property and registered to a police officer identified as Reynaldo Loyola Cruz, a member of the Aviation Security Unit detailed at the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).

Cruz was among passengers of Victory Liner bus during the August 3 Nlex robbery hold-up. His pistol was taken by the suspects including the handgun of an army soldier. (RGN/DMF/MHD) SunStar
