Philippines eyeing Texas Instruments' new 1-bln usd plant

(XFN-ASIA) - The Philippine government is courting Texas Instruments Inc to set up in the country a new plant that the US semiconductor giant plans to construct at a cost 1 bln usd, according to Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority chief executive officer Armand Arreza.

He said TI was also eyeing China as a possible site for the plant.

'We are working closely (with other government agencies) to bag the project because TI's country manager in China is also lobbying for it,' Arreza told reporters.

The company operates a factory in the Baguio City economic zone, which accounts for two-fifths of its global sales, he said.

He said TI needed 20 to 30 hectares for the new plant, and that the Baguio economic zone could no longer accommodate the proposed facility.

He said a technical team from TI was expected to visit Subic this week and would also take a look at the Clark economic zone in Pampanga.
