Guam honors Olongapeňo
ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam (AFNEWS) -- A 36th Civil Engineer Squadron Airman has received two of the highest honors the government of Guam can bestow Jan. 26.
In separate ceremonies, Staff Sgt. Ryan Ancheta, a structural craftsman with the squadron's vertical repair shop, was honored with a resolution from the Guam legislature and the governor's prestigious Guahan Award.
In the first ceremony at the Guam legislature building, Speaker Mark Forbes and Senator Ray Tenorio heralded Sergeant Ancheta's volunteer leadership in the community and "his many contributions to the people of Guam."
Sergeant Ancheta, a native of Olongapo in the Philippines, has been at Andersen AFB for two years.
In the next ceremony at the R.J. Bordallo Governor's Complex, the presentation of the governor's Guahan Award was not dampened by the governor's necessary absence, said Sergeant Ancheta's co-workers, given the historic surroundings and view atop Agana Bay.
According to the governor's office, previous recipients of the Guahan Award have ranged from chief executive officers to the Navajo code talkers of World War II, whose efforts aided in the liberation of Guam.
"It's overwhelming receiving an award like this," Sergeant Ancheta said.
Among Sergeant Ancheta's contributions downtown were participation in the annual coastal cleanup and Habitat for Humanity, which builds affordable housing for people in need.
He also helped clean kennels at the Guam Animals in Need Facility in Yigo and, most visibly, helped bring the USO back to Guam through construction efforts at the Royal Orchid hotel, said the legislature's resolution.
The resolution also cited his efforts on base, such as leading Cub Scouts and contributing to the 36th CES winning the Pacific Air Forces' Outstanding Civil Engineer Unit in the small-unit category. Sergeant Ancheta's wife and daughter were in attendance and took advantage of the event to stroll the scenic grounds of the governor's complex with him.
Sergeant Ancheta demands a lot of his Airmen on and off duty, but aggressively tries to showcase their efforts, said Seikichi Kaneshiro, the vertical repair shop chief.
Mr. Kaneshiro approached Guam officials with Sergeant Ancheta's name as part of a long tradition in his shop, he said.
Quite the honor, Mr. Kaneshiro added, because Sergeant Ancheta is one of the top performers he's seen in his military and government career spanning 60 years.
When asked for advice to those considering volunteering on the island, Sergeant Ancheta offered, "Only do it if you'd like to, not because you have to. You'll feel better at the end when you've accomplished something for others."
