Try 'beauty tourism'

The launch of this year's Mutya ng Pilipinas pageant at the Subic Yacht Club on June 7 came with a renewed commitment.

"We wanted an advocacy that would make us different from other tilts," Mutya ng Pilipinas Inc. president Roberto de Venecia told Inquirer Entertainment.

The pageant is in its 39th year.

"Mutya can promote a Philippine 'beauty tourism' that is, to project, through the contest, everything beautiful about the Philippines."

According to the Mutya executive, one of the major changes to be implemented includes having a "host locale" outside Metro Manila.

This year's Mutya is co-presented by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, with all major activities set within the Greater Subic Freeport Area, which also includes Olongapo City and the provinces of Zambales and Bataan.

"The radical changes in Mutya are meant to show that, to a certain extent, the Philippines is a cosmopolitan center," de Venecia explained. "Mutya will be focused on tourism, fashion, social responsibility and of course, beauty pageantry."

Why not, indeed?

Mutya has been accepting participants from overseas who are of Filipino descent.
"May Filipino blood sila, bakit hindi mo ipagmamalaki?" de Venecia said. He said he was proud that outgoing Mutya Kirby Ann Basken represented Norway in the recent Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City.

Basken was sent by the Filipino community in Norway to last year's local pageant. De Venecia believes that Basken and other foreign-based candidates (nine this year), will be perfect tourism ambassadors for RP.

"Part of the prize package is an exposure trip to the Philippines," he noted. "We hope they will invite people from their home countries to visit the country's tourist spots."

De Venecia admitted that he was disappointed with the Department of Tourism for its lack of support.

"The DOT, and even the PTA (Philippine Tourism Authority), have either turned down or ignored our invitation to support the pageant," he said. "And we're not even asking for funds."

To expand the Mutya tourism campaign, three major titlists will be crowned this year—Mutya ng Pilipinas-Asia Pacific International, Mutya ng Pilipinas-Tourism International and the latest addition, Mutya ng Pilipinas-Overseas Communities.

The 2007 Mutya ng Pilipinas pageant will be held at the Olongapo City Convention Center on June 22. It will be telecast over the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) on July 1.
