GSO renamed Jose Abad Santos Avenue
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo (GSO) Highway, which stretches from Nueva Ecija province to Bataan is now officially named Jose Abad Santos Avenue (Jasa).
The City Government here received a copy of Republic Act (RA) 9477 which renamed the highway after the late Supreme Court Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos, a San Fernando-born martyr.
RA 9477 was approved last May 22, 2007. This law emanated from House Bill 2231, sponsored by Third District Representative Rey B. Aquino.
HB 2231, with the full title “An Act Renaming The Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo Road (GSO Road) To Jose Abad Santos Avenue (Jasa), was filed on Aug. 9, 2004 and approved on Nov. 29, 2005.
The Senate ratified the bill only last Feb. 19, 2007 in time with the 121st birth anniversary of Abad Santos.
Abad Santos was born to Vicente Abad Santos and Toribia Basco of San Fernando.
Abad Santos is considered one of the country’s heroes due to his martyrdom when even in the face of certain death, he refused to swear allegiance to Japan during the Japanese occupation.
Many roads and highways, streets, schools and other public establishments are named after Abad Santos.
Pampanga High School, the biggest secondary public school in this city, was once named after the Kapampangan martyr.
