Taiwan chamber asks for GMA help

The head of the Subic Bay Taiwan Chamber of Commerce appealed yesterday to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to ensure the protection of foreign investors in the country, particularly in the Subic freeport and economic zone.

Susan Ho, chairman of Subic Bay Taiwan Chamber of Commerce and president of the Universal International Group of Development Co., made the appeal in the wake of President Arroyo’s invitation to businessmen of China, Australia, New Zealand, Italy and Portugal during her recent visits there to invest in the Philippines.

Ho, in a letter to President Arroyo, said that businessmen in Subic need reassurances of support by the government in the wake of the attempt by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority to take over the Taiwanese-managed Subic Bay Golf and Country Club despite an injunction order issued by Olongapo City Regional Trial Court Judge Ramon Caguioa as early as May 24, 2007.

In another letter to Taiwan Ambassador Wu Hsien Shin, Ho, whose group had invested P1 billion in the golf course and country club, appealed to the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office to protect the remaining 40 Taiwanese firms in Subic out of 300 companies-locators only a few years ago.

Ho said other groups of investors have just signified to the Subic Bay Taiwan Chamber of Commerce their intentions to put up their businesses in Subic. “These new groups of investors should be assured of protection while they conduct their business in the Philippines and employ Filipino workers.”
