Asian triathlon lures World No. 1
Triathletes get double the challenge in the tough 2007 Asian 02 Long Distance Triathlon on Aug. 4 at the Subic Bay Freeport in Zambales province.
World No. 1 Peter Vabrousek of the Czech Republic will be back to defend his title in the lung-busting 3K swim-80K bike-20K run race, which is twice the Olympic triathlon distance.
“With the success of our first event last year, we expect to attract an even bigger number of entries this year including foreign bidders,” said Tom Carrasco Jr., president of the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP).
A sprint distance of 1K swim-24K bike-5K run will also be featured in the event sanctioned by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and the Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC).
“We hope to see this long-distance triathlon event grow into something similar to the Subic Bay International Triathlon,” said Carrasco, who was recently re-elected as ASTC senior vice president and ITU Asian representative to the executive board.
The event will also run relay races and age group competitions in the men’s (20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 40-44, 45-49, 50 and up) and women’s divisions (20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40 and up).
Entry forms are available at the TRAP office at Room 212 Building Alpha at PhilSports, Pasig City; Bike King at Bonifacio High Street, Global City in Taguig City; and Speedo concept stores in SM Megamall, Podium, SM Mall of Asia and Alabang Town Center. Jasmine W. Payo - Inquirer
