SBMA exec Calimlim, 62
SUBIC BAY FREEPORT, Philippines -- Retired lieutenant general Jose Calimlim, the senior deputy administrator for operations of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), celebrated his 62nd birthday on Thursday in his hospital bed at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center.
"Apparently [Calimlim] just wanted the nurses to be happy so he threw a party for them while he was on his respirator," said Alex Allan, Calimlim's public relations officer.
At 8:40 a.m. Friday, Calimlim died of multiple organ failure, said Allan, citing reports from the official's doctors.
He said Calimlim's remains will be taken to Camp Aguinaldo and then to his hometown of Mapandan, Pangasinan. On Monday, his body will be taken here for a three-day wake.
Another wake will be held in Camp Aguinaldo on Wednesday before Calimlim is buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Cemetery of Heroes) on December 7.
Calimlim, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class 1968, was considered one of the most powerful men at the SBMA on account of his past roles -- former chief of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, former Armed Forces vice chief of staff, erstwhile head of the anti-smuggling Task Force Aduana and chief of the anti-smuggling Task Force Subic.
His SBMA position gave him authority over seaport and airport operations, the law enforcement department and the intelligence and investigation office.
Calimlim also served as commander of the Presidential Security Group.
Asked about Calimlim's illness, Allan said the official was hospitalized for "severe stress."
Allan could not confirm what exactly Calimlim was sick of.
"We weren't sure of that," Allan said.
"What [Calimlim] told me was that the doctors performed a new type of surgery on him, called cryosurgery, which involves instant freezing of a target area," he said.
