Telabastagan is 'Ligligan Parul' champ
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - The giant lantern entry of Barangay Telabastagan here was adjudged champion in the Giant Lantern Festival (GLF) 2007 competition held at the SM CityPampanga Amphitheater Saturday night.
Barangay chairman Remigio De Jesus was in high spirits while accepting the championship trophy from Senator Richard Gordon, Governor Eddie Panlilio, Mayor Oscar Rodriguez and Olongapo Mayor Kate Gordon, who was the chairman of the board of judges.

He said they did not expect to win since their goal is just to participate in support of the city administration and the old tradition.
Practically a neophyte in the competition with only its second year since rejoining GLF in 2006, Telabastagan bested seven other barangays, including defending champion San Felipe, which got the second place this year.
The board of judges, mayor Gordon said, was impressed with the innovations introduced by Telabastagan in its entry, which was crafted by a team of lantern-makers headed by Arnel Torres.
The winning entry flashed the words "Merry Christmas" while a window on its center opened to show an image depicting the Holy Family with the baby Jesus on the manger. Gordon said the judges took note of the Telabastagan's team effort despite meager resources.
Telabastagan garnered an average score of 96.5 percent.
Barangay San Felipe, whose entry was crafted by renowned lantern-maker Roland Quiambao got 95.7 percent.
Third placer is the entry of Barangay San Nicolas.
Telabastagan's win also shattered San Felipe's dream of a back-to-back win in the competition. Participating barangays need to be champion for three consecutive years to win the revolving trophy.
Other barangays who participated are Del Pilar, San Juan, Dolores, Sta. Lucia and Sto. NiƱo.
Provincial pride
Governor Panlilio said the GLF is indeed a pride of the province adding that he will be communicating with the city government for the possibility of making the tradition a provincial activity.
At present, only the city government with its P1 million annual subsidy is staging of the event, which has earned the city the title, "Christmas Capital of the Philippines."
Members of the diplomatic corps have asked the city government to invite them in the event.
"All of the entries deserve to win. They (lanterns) are awesome," the foreign diplomats said in unison.
