Cop gets 10 years in jail for robbing Olongapo prosecutor
A policeman who robbed and almost killed the fiscal in the landmark Subic rape case against a US serviceman has been sentenced to a maximum of 10 years behind bars at the Manila Regional Trial Court.
PO1 Edwin Rabago Roma, who remained at large, was found guilty of robbery by Judge Antonio de Castro of the Manila RTC Branch 3on Tuesday after he waived his right to present his defense when he jumped bail.
On Feb. 27, 2005, complainant Prudencio Jalandoni, chief prosecutor of Olongapo City, Zambales, was crossing the street at the corner of Guadalcanal and Pagkakaisa Streets, Sta. Mesa, when a heavily tinted car passed by and its backseat passenger opened the back window to ask him where "Eddie," a mechanic, lived.
After giving directions, Jalandoni said Roma and another man suddenly appeared and pointed 9-mm handguns at him, and grabbing his gold necklace with a crucifix pendant worth P30,000.
The fiscal fought back and threw a stone at the suspects, who later fired at him but missed. When the armed men fled, Jalandoni reported the incident at Station 8 where he identified Roma in a lineup.
A month later, Jalandoni said he saw Roma's photo in a tabloid in connection with another robbery. He also filed an attempted homicide case against Roma at the Metropolitan Trial Court.
The cop formerly of the National Capital Region Police Office has been implicated in a string of robberies in Manila but he remained free due to the bailable offenses.
Jalandoni helped prepare the case against American Marine Lance Corporal Daniel Smith who was found guilty of raping a Filipino woman in late 2006
