Four killed, 30 hurt in Bataan road crash
Four people died and at least 30 were rushed to hospital following a head-on collision between a passenger jeepney and a trailer truck in Dinalupihan, Bataan before dawn Wednesday.
The fatalities were named Wednesday afternoon as Consolacion Morales, Alvina Bruno, Ofenia Canonizado and Maribel Capit. One of the injured victims, meanwhile, was identified as Eddie dela Cruz, who suffered a broken bone in the waist area.
The victims were mostly Aetas from Sitio Bantog in Barangay Sta. Juliana in Capas, Tarlac. They were on their way to a feast in Botolan, Zambales when tragedy struck in Barangay Roosevelt in Dinalupihan around 4 a.m.
Senior Inspector Rogelio Rillon of the Dinalupihan police said that 42 Aetas were on board the passenger jeepney.
Two of the fatalities expired before reaching the Jose Payumo Memorial Hospital in Dinalupihan.
Fourteen injured victims were also taken to the same hospital. They were identified as Lani dela Cruz, Anna Mae dela Cruz, Carlito dela Cruz, Oliva Canonizado, Dory Morales, Matet Evangelista, Ireen Morales, Lojie Morales, Michelle Evangelista and Rolando Evangelista.
Another victim, meanwhile, died before reaching the James Gordon Memorial Hospital in Olongapo City in Zambales. Three other victims are in critical condition at the hospital while 22 others were treated for slight injuries.
The still unnamed driver of the FedEx truck and jeepney driver Edward Bayan were also taken to the Olongapo hospital for treatment.
Bayan suffered from head injury and had broken bones in the hip. He insisted that his vehicle had the right of way.
Police, meanwhile, said that judging from the damage on the jeepney, Bayan should be blamed for the accident.
Police added that once it establishes that Bayan was at fault, he will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and serious physical injuries.
Authorities, meanwhile, said that the portion of the Dinalupihan highway in Barangay Roosevelt in accident-prone. They said that accidents take place there almost on a weekly basis.
They advised motorists to exercise caution whenever passing through the area, especially if they are not familiar with the road's curves. With reports from Sheryll Mundo, ABS-CBN News and dzMM
